The aim of achieving good health of women and children, particularly pregnant women and mothers of newborns, teenage girls is not being fulfilled as expected. The aim was also to keep them free of malnutrition and anaemia.
The AWWs later imparted training to mothers in their respective AWCs. Post intervention data was collected after three months.Outcome measures were improvement in oral health status (plaque, debris, gingival health), oral habits (brushing, rinsing) and decrease in caries activity
A typical Anganwadi center provides basic health care in a village. It is a part of the Indian public health care system. Basic health care activities include contraceptive counseling and supply, nutrition education and supplementation, as well as pre-school activities
These centres provide supplementary nutrition, non-formal pre-school education, nutrition, and health education, immunization, health check-up and referral services of which the last three are provided in convergence with public health systems

The Integrated Child Development Services scheme did not have provision for the construction of AWC buildings as this was envisaged to be provided by the community except for the North Eastern States.
There is a check list with 21 points to achieve the target. The items include evolving plans for women and child anganwadi-wise, promoting institutional deliveries, family planning, review of health of these sections every month, addressing the problems in mother’s feeding children, identifying ailments among children, immunisation deficiency and anaemia among women.
A Mukhya Sevika supervises between 40 and 65 Anganwadi workers, providing them with on-the-job training. Mukhya Sevikas' other duties include keeping track of people of lower economic status benefiting from the program, in particular the malnourished; guiding the Anganwadi workers in assessing children's age and weight and plotting their weight; demonstrating effective methods of providing health and nutrition education to mothers; and maintaining statistics on Anganwadis and their workers to determine what can be improved. The Mukhya Sevikas report to the Child Development Projects.
Anganwadi workers have the advantage over the physicians living in the same rural area, which gives them insight into the state of health in the locality and assists in identifying the cause of problems and in countering them. They also have better social skills and can therefore more easily interact with the local people.[citation needed] As locals, they know and are comfortable with the local language and ways, are acquainted with the people, and are trusted.
